Magnesium: a magical mineral for us all!

Magnesium has become an indispensable part of the shelves of any drugstore or health store . Not surprising, because magnesium is a mineral with an incredible number of talents. It is super important for our body because it plays a role in various processes in the body, both physical and mental. Then you should think about maintaining flexible muscles and strong bones, activating natural energy in the body, contributing to a clear mind and reducing fatigue. That's no small feat! But before you resort to magnesium supplementation; How do you ensure that you get enough magnesium every day so that all the processes in our body continue to run optimally? Our body can absorb magnesium from food, including from bread and grain products, dark green leafy vegetables, dairy products, meat, nuts and legumes. With a varied diet (with magnesium in food) you often get enough of it. But there are times when your body could use some extra magnesium. A magnesium supplement in the form of magnesium tablets or magnesium capsules can offer a solution.

Magnesium citrate, malate, bisglycinate or magnesium taurate?: what is the best form of magnesium?

There are many types and forms of magnesium on the market. The best known are citrate and bisglycinate. It depends on your personal goals to determine what the best magnesium tablets are for you. At Golden Naturals we are regularly asked the following questions: what is the difference between magnesium citrate and magnesium bisglycinate ? And is one form better than the other? What is the best magnesium? We have the answers! To begin with, the magnesium is the same in all compounds, only the substance to which magnesium is bound differs. Magnesium citrate is an organically bound form: the body can absorb it well. We mainly recommend the citrate form if your goal is to maintain flexible muscles.

All different forms of magnesium in supplements at a glance

  • Magnesium taurate; linked to the amino acid taurine, supports energy and is well absorbed.

  • Magnesium malate; the combination with malic acid makes it very easy to absorb, ideal for athletes and people looking for support for their muscles.

  • Magnesium citrate; bound to citric acid, suitable for general use and supports muscle function.

  • Magnesium bisglycinate; gentle on the stomach, easily absorbed, and suitable for people who are looking for magnesium for general use.

Other forms include:

  • Magnesium chloride; easily absorbed, can be used both orally and transdermally (through the skin).

  • Magnesium sulphate; better known as Epsom salt, mainly used for baths to relieve muscle pain and stress.

  • Magnesium lactate; is well tolerated by the digestive system and is a suitable choice for people sensitive to other forms of magnesium.

  • Magnesium orotate; contains orotic acid and is often used for heart health due to its purported benefits to the cardiovascular system.

  • Magnesium oxide; less easily absorbed and can have a laxative effect, is therefore less recommended.

Magnesium bisglycinate

Magnesium bisglycinate is a special case. It is also a magnesium compound and, like magnesium citrate, organically bound. The special 'talent' of bisglycinate is that it bypasses the so-called 'mineral competition' in the body. It works like this: several minerals use the same transporters, which hinders the absorption of magnesium. However, magnesium considers glycinate to be an amino acid, which means that, unlike other magnesium compounds, it is absorbed particularly well into our body. Moreover, bisglycinate consists of very fine, small particles, which means it can also reach your brain, something that citrate does less well or not at all. Magnesium bisglycinate is therefore the best choice for maintaining a good memory and a normal mental balance .

Why often combined with vitamin B6?

Magnesium and vitamin B6 are often used together in supplements because B6 improves the absorption of magnesium and together they support the nervous system, which helps reduce fatigue.

What does magnesium contain?

Good sources of magnesium are nuts, seeds, whole grain products, green leafy vegetables, bananas and legumes.

How much magnesium per day is recommended?

  • Do you use magnesium for your muscles? Then take 1 tablet 3 times a day.
  • Magnesium for during or after exercise? Always a good idea! Then take 1 x daily before training/competition and 2 magnesium capsules after training/competition. This way you get enough magnesium.
  • Do you want to use magnesium before or during stressful situations ? Then take 1 magnesium capsule 3 times a day, the last capsule half an hour before going to sleep.
  • Do you want to use magnesium at night or for your night's sleep ? Then take a magnesium tablet half an hour before going to bed.
  • To reduce fatigue, it is best to take magnesium in the morning with breakfast (2 tablets) and with lunch (1 tablet).
  • For normal functioning of the muscles and nerves at night: 1 magnesium tablet half an hour after the evening meal and 2 magnesium tablets half an hour before going to bed.

Do magnesium tablets have possible side effects?

Magnesium tablets are safe to use for people with normal kidney function; any excess magnesium is quickly excreted by the kidneys. With normal magnesium intake (in addition to your diet, a maximum of 400 mg magnesium per day from supplementation) there are hardly any side effects. Naturally, we do our utmost to inform you as completely as possible about the contents and effects of all our Golden Naturals products. Unfortunately, we cannot provide (complete) information about all uses and possible side effects of magnesium pills.
