Frequently asked questions about vitamin B12

At Golden Naturals we regularly receive questions about the intake of the vitamin B12. We have therefore listed the most frequently asked questions for you.

How Much Vitamin B12 per Day?

A Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin B12 has been established by the Health Council. This is what is considered to be enough for your body to function normally. The minimum amount of vitamin B12 you need per day differs per age and life stage. The recommended daily allowance for men and women from the age of 14 is 2.8 micrograms. This is 3.2 micrograms for pregnant women and 3.8 micrograms for breastfeeding women. (Sources: Health Council 2014 & 2018)

Do you suspect that you have an insufficient vitamin B12 level?

Blood tests at the GP or orthomolecular therapist (by means of an EMB blood test) can provide a definite answer. If there is indeed a reduced level, then it makes sense to take a high-dose vitamin B12 supplement in order to restore the level. Generally, vitamin B12 comes in the form of a (melt) tablet, but the vitamin can also be administered as an injection. B12 injections are often prescribed to get blood levels up quickly, but do not always have to be used for a long time. After a while you can switch to vitamin B12 supplements in tablet or capsule form.

Why are Golden Naturals B12 products dosed so high?

Unfortunately, after ingestion, a large part is broken down by the body before it arrives at its 'destination'. Such a high orthomolecular dosage is necessary to ensure that sufficient active ingredients actually penetrate into the cells and can be effective.

Can I Get Too Much Vitamin B12?

The chance of adverse effects from too much vitamin B12 is very small. There are no known unwanted effects in people who took too much vitamin B12 for a long time. The body ensures that not too much vitamin B12 is absorbed into the body from the gastrointestinal tract.

The maximum (daily) dose of vitamin B12 in Golden Naturals products meets the safe, legally established standard (tolerable upper intake level (UL)) at all times. In addition, all our B12 products are developed in accordance with GMP guidelines. In doing so, we adhere to the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) formulation of the various umbrella scientific bodies, such as EFSA, FDA and FNB.
