What exactly is blood pressure?

Many people have heard of the word blood pressure more often than not, but what exactly is your blood pressure? Blood pressure is a measure of the force with which blood presses against the walls of the arteries as it circulates through the body. It is often measured in millimetres of mercury (mm/Hg) and is expressed as two numbers. The first higher number is systolic blood pressure, also known as upper pressure, which measures the pressure when the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries. The second lower number is diastolic blood pressure, also known as negative pressure, which measures the pressure when the heart is between contractions and fills with blood.
