Vitamin D is supplement of the year 2022!

Vitamin D is by far the most popular vitamin in the Netherlands. This is evident from the 'Supplement of the Year' election, for which participants could vote online for their favorite vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements in recent weeks. Vitamin D has been named Supplement of the Year for the second year in a row, making it a convincing winner.

The Information Center for Nutritional Supplements & Health (IVG) annually organizes the Supplement of the Year election, looking for the preferences of the Dutch public for certain vitamins, minerals, herbs or other supplements. Nearly 2,000 people have let them know which dietary supplement they are taking and why.

Vitamin D convinces again

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the usefulness and importance of vitamin D. It is therefore perhaps no surprise that this 'sun vitamin' is the public's favorite for the second time in a row: no less than 70% of the participants indicated to use vitamin D. Besides the fact that it is one of the vitamins for which the Health Council gives supplementation advice for the majority of the Dutch population, this vitamin has also been in the media a lot because of its important contribution to the functioning of the immune system. Working on the immune system has been extra important for many people in recent times.

Also on stage: magnesium, curcuma and omega-3

Voters could indicate their favorite in the category vitamins and minerals, supplements based on herbs and plants and other supplements. Vitamin D became the overall winner. Magnesium finished in strong second. Curcuma was the frontrunner in the herbal and plant supplements category. In the other supplements category, omega-3 turned out to be the big favorite.

Why do people choose a supplement?

This was also an important question in the survey. Almost two thirds of the participants (59%) indicated that working on the resistance and supporting the immune system is the main reason for using nutritional supplements. 44 percent answered that they see the use of nutritional supplements as part of a healthy lifestyle. A third also reported that they experienced positive effects from the use of dietary supplements.

Why is vitamin D so important?

Vitamin D is also known as the sun vitamin. Our skin can make its own vitamin D under the influence of sunlight. That is also the reason that not everyone in the Netherlands gets enough vitamin D during the year. Especially in recent years with a lot of working from home and the Dutch sun that is not always powerful enough. That is why the Health Council advises certain groups to take vitamin D supplements all year round.
