Magnesium is supplement of the year 2023

The Information Center for Nutritional Supplements & Health (IVG) recently conducted an online survey where the public could vote for their favorite nutritional supplement. The results of the survey show that dietary supplements are still popular among the Dutch population and that more than half of the Dutch population use dietary supplements.

Magnesium was chosen as the Supplement of the Year 2023, followed by Vitamin D in second place and Omega-3 in third place. Voters indicated that magnesium is mainly used for muscles, sleep, rest and relaxation, due to the mineral's scientifically proven health effects. Magnesium supports many functions in the body, such as maintaining flexible and strong muscles, the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain and the maintenance of strong bones and teeth. It is therefore understandable that magnesium is rightly in the spotlight.

Vitamin D in second place

Vitamin D came second because of its role in maintaining strong bones and teeth, muscle strength and resistance. Our body can produce vitamin D itself under the influence of sunlight, but not everyone in the Netherlands produces enough vitamin D. That is why the Health Council advises certain groups to take vitamin D supplements all year round.

Omega-3 in third place

Omega-3 took third place. The essential fatty acids omega-3 are an important building block for our brains and contribute to a good blood pressure and a normal fat content in our blood. The Health Council advises eating fish at least once a week to get enough of these fatty acids, but the latest RIVM Food Consumption Survey shows that about 70% of adults do not achieve this. Dietary supplements with omega-3 fatty acids are therefore a good alternative if you do not eat enough fish.

The survey also shows that many voters use nutritional supplements to support their health, while others use nutritional supplements as a supplement to diet, on the advice of a healthcare professional or because of medication. It is good to see that the Dutch are consciously working on their health and use nutritional supplements to support their health.

In conclusion, the IVG survey shows that magnesium, vitamin D and omega-3 are currently the most popular dietary supplements among the Dutch population. It is important to remember that nutritional supplements are not a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle, but can be a valuable addition to maintaining good health.
